| Background: | This agenda item is the first in a series focusing on specific AUSD instructional programs. The focus for this item is the BaySci initiative and the current efforts to support high quality science instruction in AUSD. This includes the AUSD Vision and Mission for Science which was collaboratively created by teachers and administrators in the district. It also includes a sample of the professional development being implemented to increase teacher and principal understanding of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), shifts in science instruction and the transition towards Science and Engineering Practices, and a deep understanding of the intersection between NGSS, Common Core State Standards (CCSS) English Language Arts (ELA) and CCSS Math. The district is implementing Full Option Science System (FOSS) curriculum in stages for GRADES K-8 to support inquiry and discovery-based science instruction and create systems to ensure teachers and students have the necessary materials to deliver high-quality instruction. |
