BOARD AGENDA ITEM

Item Title:Approval of Proposed Encinal High School Pools Schematic Design (5 Mins/ Action)
Item Type:Action
Background:

Alameda Unified School District, the City of Alameda, and the Alameda Housing Authority entered into an agreement resulting in a property exchange and cash payments to AUSD. AUSD received $1.9 million earmarked for upgrading Encinal High School's aging swim complex.

In the fall of 2014, an EHS Pool Design Committee met twice to discuss the design and configuration of the pool. Members of the committee included staff from the Alameda Unified School District, Department of Recreation and Parks, swimming and water polo coaches, community swim club members, and staff from Quattrochi Kwok Architects and Aquatic Design Group. Four options – with varying numbers of lanes and varying orientations -- were considered, along with their costs. The committee agreed on a design with nine 7-foot lanes. Estimated cost is $2.4 million dollars.

The current estimated timeline for the project construction is one year, which will start during the summer of 2015.

The Board is asked to approve the presented schematic design. Upon approval, AUSD staff will work with Quattrochi Kwok Architects and community groups to complete the final design for Board approval.
