ALAMEDA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
BOARD AGENDA ITEM

Item Title:Approval of the Proposed Paid Student Lunch Price Adjustment (5 Mins/Action)
Item Type:Action
Background:

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA), Section 205, requires School Food Authorities to calculate the price of a paid lunch cost based on current paid lunch price and the number of paid lunches sold, and then compare that calculation to the National School Lunch Program free/reduced price meal reimbursement rates.

The Federal calculations of the weighted average price is $2.70 per paid student lunch.  With the 2014-2015 paid lunch rates at all schools, the AUSD weighted average price is $2.60, which is 10 cents below the Federally required level.  The District is out of compliance with the Federal HHFKA regulations.

For 2015-2016, the cost of a paid lunch for all students will rise by 10 cents.  The elementary will increase from $2.50 to $2.60.  The middle school lunch price will go from $3.00 per lunch to $3.10, and the high school lunch price will increase from $3.25 to $3.35.

The planned increase of 10 cents per paid lunch will increase the District’s weighted average price to $2.70.

Staff recommends the proposed pricing structure.  AUSD encourages all families to apply for the Free/Reduced-Price Meal Program. Applications are sent out at the beginning of each school year and are available throughout the year as financial situations may change.  Applications are available on the AUSD website at www.alameda.k12.ca.us or at your child’s school office.  Please contact the Food and Nutrition Services Office at 337.7079 for more information.
