Item Title: | Resolution No. 2016-2017.24 in Support of Proposition 58, The LEARN (Language Education, Acquisition, and Readiness Now) Initiative Public Education Act (Senate Bill 1174), | Item Type: | Action | Background: | In 1998, voters approved Proposition 227 requiring that all students be taught in Englishand that English learners be taught in sheltered English-immersion courses. Proposition 58, a ballot initiative which will appear on the November 2016 ballot, would repeal those provisions. It would also require pupils to be taught in structured English-immersion programs for the purpose of providing access to core academic standards and that school districts provide effective and appropriate methods for language acquisition programs.
