The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was signed on December 2, 1975 giving all children with disabilities access to free and appropriate public education.
In 2010, with the 35th anniversary of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act being celebrated, the state of California, Alameda County Office of Education, and Alameda Unified School District recognized December 2nd as the Day of the Special Educator.
In appreciation of the contributions made by special educators in teaching pupils with unique needs, Alameda Unified School District acknowledges and proclaims December 2nd as Day of the Special Educator.
