Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA) and AUSD's Construction staff will present the Wood Middle School Campus Modernization project for Board approval. The schematic design for the Wood Middle School Campus Modernization Measure B project follows the district’s updated Facilities Master Plan, the Measure B approved project list, the critical facility needs identified per Measure I, as well as established priorities as acknowledged at site committee meetings held on December 8, 2022, January 12, 2023, February 2, 2023, March 2, 2023, April 5, 2023, and April 25, 2023.
The Wood Middle School campus transformation replaces all but the existing multi-purpose building and provides a new two-story classroom building, a new administration/library building and a new gymnasium.
The campus layout provides a new access road with a drop-off for improved student safety and a more efficient entrance. The drop-off connects to a new access road and parking for the future Alameda High School athletic stadium. The project also provides a temporary campus of portable buildings at the demolished Lum campus for temporary housing during construction - this temporary campus will also be used by Otis Elementary School during their Measure B construction project.
The current design includes the creation of a safe drop-off zone for students. Portions of the new drop-off and parking lot are on the City of Alameda’s property. The District is working with the City of Alameda to gain an easement for the portion of the City’s property.
Following Board approval, QKA will prepare detailed designs for submission to the Division of the State Architect. Construction on this project is estimated to begin in October 2024.
