In 2015, the California State Legislature recognized that civilians should not bring guns into primary and secondary schools and enacted Senate Bill 707 which prohibits a person with a concealed carry permit from carrying a firearm into a public or private K-12 school. While this Senate Bill was lauded by local school districts, there was a loophole in the law that still allows school districts to let specified civilians bring firearms onto school campuses.
Members of the Board of Education asked staff to draft a resolution in support of Assembly Bill 424 (McCarty), which seeks to close this loophole to strengthen the state's gun laws to prevent firearms from being permitted on school campuses.
