Since April 28, 2017, the Board has been engaged in a public process of reviewing recommendations by structural engineers that students and staff be relocated from Lum Elementary to other sites as soon as feasible. The Board has received reports from two structural engineering firms, two geotechnical engineering firms, and its master architects regarding the risks posed to Lum. The Board has also heard presentations from staff regarding the feasibility of relocating students and staff. The Board has also heard from members of the Lum community who are concerned about the future of Lum and whether the risk posed to Lum warrants relocation of students to other sites.
The Board has previously indicated that it would take action on the structural engineer’s recommendation at its May 23 meeting. This is that action item. If approved, it would:
-
Relocate students and staff to other sites chosen consistent with Board guidance no later than the first day of the 2017-18 school year and not return students or staff to Lum without future Board approval;
-
Require staff to develop detailed cost and timeline estimates for possible remediation or replacement of the existing buildings at Lum and publicly present those findings to the Board;
-
Create a District Advisory Committee tasked with considering the District’s long-term facility needs, including possible future uses of the Lum site.
