Background:

Each year the Board of Education recognizes the countless contributions that African Americans have made and proclaims February as African American History Month.  The observance calls our attention to the extraordinary contributions African Americans have made to the rich cultural history of our nation.  

 

At the last Board of Education meeting on January 23rd, Community Organizer Rasheed Shabazz recommended changes to the African American History Month Proclamation seeking to acknowledge the contributions of local Alamedans.

 

The recommended changes are reflected in the Proclamation being brought forward tonight.
