ALAMEDA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
BOARD AGENDA ITEM

Item Title:Update on Emma Hood Swim Complex (10 Mins/Board Direction/Action)
Item Type:Board Direction Sought/Action
Background:

On January 22, 2019, AUSD staff met officials from the Environmental Health Department and discussed various code violations present at the Emma Hood Swim Complex.  Code violations related to signage and record keeping have been fixed, and thus the Environmental Health Department will allow the District to use the swimming pool through May 31, 2019. The Environmental Health Department currently plans to shut down the pool on June 1, 2019, due to code violations that require extensive repair or upgrades.

The District worked with outside consultant Aquatic Design Group to estimate the cost of repairs and upgrades and were presented with an estimate of up to $2.9 million.  This cost may increase or decrease based on DSA requirements related to ADA access.

On February 13, 2019, AUSD staff and City of Alameda officials discussed the Emma Hood Swim Complex at its City/School Subcommittee Meeting. City staff acknowledged the primary use of the complex is that of the community rather than the District. City Council will discuss this issue and potential remediation going forward at its March 5, 2019 City Council meeting.

This item is presented to inform the Board of the extensive issues identified at the Emma Hood Swim Complex and provide an update on current discussions/negotiations with the City of Alameda regarding remediation and future responsibilities. Staff request guidance from the Board if they are interested in AUSD forming a subcommittee with the City of Alameda to explore repair and/or replacement of Emma Hood Swim Complex.
