ALAMEDA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
BOARD AGENDA ITEM

Item Title:Approval of Change to School Information for Maya Lin
Item Type:Consent
Background:

On May 23, 2017, the Board of Education approved the indefinite relocation of students and staff from Donald D. Lum Elementary School due to seismic risk (Resolution No. 2016-2017.76).  This was followed by the Board’s approval on June 27, 2017 of Interim School Enrollment Zones for new enrollees, modifying previous enrollment policies/boundaries in effect for a number of AUSD elementary schools.  Included in the impacted schools was Maya Lin.  Maya Lin was opened in July 2012 following the closure and restructuring of the former Washington Elementary School.  Opened as an alternative school of choice, Maya Lin operated under open enrollment policies.

The decision to (1) relocate Donald D. Lum Elementary School students and staff to Maya Lin in May 2017 and (2) the subsequent establishment of an interim school enrollment zone for new enrollees together disqualified Maya Lin from any continued status as an alternative school of choice.  California Education Code (EC 58503) and AUSD Board Policy both state that teachers employed and students enrolled in an alternative school shall be selected entirely from volunteers.  As both staff and students were placed and continue to be enrolled at Maya Lin non-voluntarily (per established district boundaries), the school’s status must be updated.  Approval of this item would formally change the status of Maya Lin from ‘Alternative School of Choice’ to ‘Elementary School (Public)’ effective July 1, 2019.
