Per California School Board Association (CSBA), one of the primary ways a governance team can strengthen or maintain its effectiveness is to periodically assess its own performance. CSBA’s board self–evaluation provides the opportunity to step back and reflect on how well a board is meeting its responsibilities and provides the board and superintendent with valuable perception data, revealing the range of perceptions among board members regarding the performance of the board and the governance team as a whole.
This evening the Board will initiate a process for conducting a periodic review of the governance team’s practices, with guidance through the two self-evaluation tools attached to this item.
The goal tonight will be to conduct preliminary norm-setting on the board self-evaluation process, engage in some initial discussion on current functioning and governance relative to the aforementioned tools, and then dive deeper into a collective self-evaluation in January where the board will select up to 3 goals for effective governance for the coming year.
