Item Title:Proclamation: African American History Month - February
Item Type:Consent
Background:

African American history reflects a determined spirit of perseverance and cultural pride in a people's struggle to equally share in the opportunities of a nation founded upon the principles of freedom and liberty for all people.

Each year the Board of Education recognizes the countless contributions that African Americans have made and proclaims February as African American History Month.  The observance calls our attention to the extraordinary contributions African Americans have made to the rich cultural history of our nation.

The theme for African American History Month - February 2020 is, "African Americans and the Vote" which speaks to the ongoing struggle on the part of both black men and women for the right to vote. The year 2020 marks the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment and the culmination of the women's suffrage movement, and the sesquicentennial of the Fifteenth Amendment (1870) and the right of black men to the ballot after the Civil War.
