The food and nutrition program’s costs have been increasing and are putting pressure on self-sustainability of the program. A contribution from the unrestricted general fund would be required if program costs exceed program revenue. Staff is recommending an increase in full-pay lunch prices to ensure the food and nutrition program is able to meet its financial obligations.
Staff is recommending to increase the price of paid lunch for elementary schools from $3.25 to $3.50, middle schools from $3.75 to $4.00, and high schools from $4.00 to $4.25 as well as an increased breakfast rate of $2.00 for all groups.
This increase will help with the rising salaries and food costs and will still be within the average lunch price of our surrounding Districts.
This recommended increase will have no impact on students who qualify for a free or reduced-priced meal. AUSD encourages all families to apply for the Free/Reduced-Price Meal Program.
Applications for free or reduced-priced meals are sent out at the beginning of each school year and are available throughout the year as financial situations may change. Applications are available at school sites and on the district’s website at www.alamedaunified.org.
